Schools' Ministry: Relationships

Helping your congregation grow long-term, meaningful connections with local schools

Building relationships that last

Your aim in schools’ ministry may be to strengthen relationships that already exist, or to develop new ones.

You may have taken some first steps already and want to build on those. Or perhaps you’ve been connected with a local school for a while and need fresh ideas for deepening the relationship.

Now that you’ve taken time to get to know the school and its staff, it’s time to build trust by offering practical support.

Ways to connect and serve

There are lots of different ways you can build lasting relationships with your local school:

  • Offer to host a church visit as part of an R.E. class. Many pupils learn about the different churches in their area and a daytime visit could be part of the curriculum. Even if many people in your congregation are working, retired members may be able to help welcome pupils and support the visit.
  • Offer your church building for school events. Many schools struggle to find venues for things like carol services, prize-givings or concerts. Your building could be a valuable resource.
  • Invite school staff and governors to services of prayer and encouragement. This shows care and deepens relationship.
  • Invite a Scripture Union group or class from the local school to lead a service at your church.
  • Encourage individuals in your congregation to offer specialist skills, from gardening, music and sport to reading, helping in the playground or canteen or joining a PTA or Board of Governors. These everyday acts of service build trust and create opportunities to share faith naturally.
