Schools' Ministry: First Steps

Practical starting points for connecting with your local schools

First steps

A great starting point in building relationships with your local schools is simply learning more about them. How many schools are nearby? Where are they? What size are they, and do they already have church connections?

You might begin by finding out more about:

  • Nursery schools
  • Primary/national schools
  • Post-primary/national schools
  • Special schools

It’s also helpful to discover who in your congregation already has links to these schools or others further afield. Look out for:

  • Teachers
  • Classroom assistants
  • Pupils, especially those at key transition stages
  • Others involved in school life, e.g. governors, volunteers, caretakers
  • Visitors to schools, such as those leading assemblies or inspections

Take time to chat to those connected with school life. What is it like to work or study there? What are the joys and challenges? Speak to principals and visit school websites. Ask how your church can pray for staff and pupils, both individuals and the school as a whole. Find out how many classes and how many children attend.

Once you’ve got a clearer picture of your local schools and the people in your congregation involved with them, you’ll be ready to explore new opportunities for connection and support.
