The Moderator, Right Reverend Dr Richard Murray, addressing December's Special General Assembly.

In a letter to ministers calling the Special General Assembly, the Moderator of the General Assembly, Right Reverend Dr Richard Murray, said that the meeting was “…to address some pressing matters that have arisen as a consequence of our safeguarding failures.”

Dr Murray continued by saying that the Assembly would hear updates on progress regarding General Council task groups that were set up as a result of December’s Special Assembly, but primarily it was meeting to address two specific matters.

The Moderator said that the first was “to consider ceremonial and reporting aspects of the 2026 June Assembly, and second, the urgent matter of approving the appointment process of a new Clerk of the General Assembly…” In relation to the latter, Dr Murray said “[This] is a key role within our denomination and we hope to appoint a suitably qualified candidate at the General Assembly in June.”

All reports, resolutions and the order of business will be sent to delegates as a PDF, and will be publicly available on the PCI website in the next few days. As before, hard copies will be made available on the day of the Special General Assembly and will be available for collection at registration.

In relation to the ongoing work regarding the safeguarding failures identified last year the moderator assured ministers, that these are being addressed in many ways, with progress being made in the production of new policies, recruitment of new safeguarding staff and responding to the institution of a statutory inquiry by the Charity Commission.

Dr Murray was also keen in his letter to remind those attending, “that we are keeping those who have been hurt or harmed in our prayers, while making sure they are supported practically in the best possible ways.”
