Preparations for GA26 well underway

With the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland (PCI) opening in less than two month's time on Tuesday, 9 June and closing on the afternoon of Friday, 12 June work on the business that will be before members, is well underway.

The annual meeting brings together active ministers and a representative elder from each of PCI’s 500-plus congregations from across Ireland, some retired ministers, including past Moderators, and under 30 representatives - men and women from Aghadowey to Arklow, Cork to Coleraine, and many more places in between.

Together they constitute PCI’s principal decision-making body, debating and taking decisions prayerfully that can often shape the Church’s ministry and future. With times of worship and teaching, it is also a time when the Church gives voice collectively to the concerns of many people within and outside of the Church.

Speaking about the General Assembly, the Assembly’s Deputy Clerk, Rev Peter Gamble said,

“Much has happened since the close of the 2025 General Assembly last June. In the intervening 11 months the Church has seen the resignation of a Moderator, the return of another, and the calling of two Special General Assemblies as a result of the central safeguarding failures that were announced by PCI in November. This year, those matters will be to the fore when we meet in two months’ time, coupled with the fact that all of our General Assembly’s Councils will report verbally this year, we will meet for an additional day and on two evenings.”

With denominational representatives from churches in Great Britain and Ireland, and overseas delegates from PCI’s partners also in attendance, the four-day meeting takes place in Assembly Buildings in central Belfast. The Moderator of the General Assembly, Rt Rev Dr Richard Murray, will officially constitute and open the Assembly at a service of worship on Tuesday morning. It will close with the General Assembly Communion Service on Friday, which will be led by PCI’s new Moderator, Rev Richard Kerr.

Mr Kerr, who is the minister of Templepatrick Presbyterian Church in County Antrim, will be installed on Wednesday afternoon. Members of the public are welcome to attend the installation service, the opening of the General Assembly on the Tuesday morning, and all public business sessions, will be livestreamed and can be found here on this website. Anyone who loves the Lord Jesus will be welcome to take part in the Communion Service at the close of the Assembly.

The Deputy Clerk said that while preparations are well underway, there will be much work to get through,

“General Assemblies are busy times, and I would encourage those who are entitled to attend to make every effort to do so. Last year we had a number of interim reports, which will now come to this year’s Assembly in completed form for debate and discussion. This General Assembly will also consider the important business that relates to safeguarding in its many aspects, and the work that the two special assemblies commissioned. Safeguarding will, therefore, form much of what will be discussed on the first day of business.

“While it is a time for debating reports and getting through the business before us, it is also a time of coming together before God, and there will be a number of scheduled times for reflective worship, and teaching, from our outgoing and incoming Moderators. This year Councils will report in a slightly amended manner, with an emphasis on what God has done and the response of prayer.

As we get closer to June, please pray for all those who are finalising reports, working through the various administrative aspects of the Assembly, and for the business that will be before us.”
