Naomi's mission work

The TEE department offers basic theological training to all church members, especially those who would otherwise not have access to it due to factors such as age, location, education and finances. The aim is to prepare learners to come to and grow in their faith, to serve effectively as church leaders, preachers, counsellors, child nurturers and active witnesses within their circles of influence. To accomplish this, the department produces and administers TEE study materials to members of the PCEA church as well as other churches who may wish to use such materials.

The TEE department also has an outreach programme to prisoners where churches “Sponsor-an-Inmate” to study the basic diploma course. This programme has had a life-changing impact on many who have gone through it.

Naomi leads a team of writers in developing new programmes for the department. The first, known as the ‘Holistic Nurturing of Children’ diploma course, is aimed at helping adults care for children in the home, church and community. The second course called ‘The Crossing’, is a mentoring programme for teens preparing to transition from childhood (leaving primary school) into young adult life.

Recently, the writing team have been developing a series of five Bible Study guidebooks on a variety of themes, namely: politics, worship music, the true gospel, God’s world and family life. The department hopes to use the annual general meeting of the church, in April 2026, to market these as suitable materials for district fellowships. These fellowship groups meet regularly within the homes of church members.

Naomi says, “By creating educational materials that are readily available to congregations throughout Kenya and beyond, a greater impact can be made on the spiritual life and witness of the Church of Christ. I am passionate about using these writing opportunities to encourage and challenge others to obey the call of God on their lives. My prayer is that changes will come for his glory and to advance his kingdom.”

Naomi Leremore (née Martin) trained as a teacher before being commissioned and sent overseas by her home congregation of Craigyhill Presbyterian Church, Carrickfergus Presbytery in 1991. Her first assignment was teaching in a secondary school in Malawi. Following this, she relocated to Kenya, firstly lecturing at Rubate Teacher Training College, then working in children’s ministry within PCEA Ruiru Parish. She has also trained pre-school teachers at the Lay Training Centre and helped in the writing of Sunday School teachers’ guidebooks. Naomi is married to Thomas, who works in the sphere of peace and conflict resolution. They have two teenage sons.

From Dawn to Dusk

It was early morning when we said our emotional family farewells below the “Departures” sign inside the airport. My husband Thomas and our younger son Silas (15) were heading back to Kenya at the end of the summer holidays, leaving Aaron (18) and myself behind. Driving from the brightly lit parking onto the main road outside, headlights flashed in the rear view mirror; a friendly reminder that I’d forgotten to switch these on!

Nearing home, we stopped to watch the sun coming up, lighting the sky and reflecting off the sea. It was the perfect moment to soak in a stunningly beautiful sunrise. A dawn bringing comfort and assurance of God’s presence with us. A Creator-sent reminder of who is in control of all things…. We entered a new phase in our family life that day as the travellers landed in Nairobi at sunset.

From Ireland to Kenya 

A news update came in from Rachel who works in a Kenyan congregation. She and her team of seven teachers recently held a Vacation Bible School (VBS) using the theme of Knowing our God.

The key verses included the words “... so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting people may know there is none besides me. I am the Lord, and there is no other." (Isaiah 45:6)

Each day 130 children aged between 3 and 13 years old came to the VBS – to learn and grow in their faith and to make memories having fun! Rachel said, “Our children joyfully engaged in beadwork, creating beautiful designs as they learned, explored their creativity, and built new skills.”

Most of Rachel’s team have gone through the Holistic Nurturing of Children course run by the Theological Education by Extension (TEE) programme. This encourages us in the work of creating courses that are both relevant and impactful for the Church in Kenya.

Prayer Points

• Thank God, who created the sun for order and life, who sent his son Jesus, the Christ light into our world. Ask for help that we might shine as lights that point to him.
• Thank God for the blessing of family time in Ireland and the opportunity to reconnect and strengthen the ties that bind. Pray for Thomas and Silas in Kenya while Naomi engages in deputation during September. Also remember Aaron as he settles in Northern Ireland.
• Praise the Lord for the VBS coordinated by Rachel and her team. Thank him for the HNC programme which has helped them learn how to handle the children well and how to teach spiritual truths to children.
