New Year Message From Presbyterian Moderator Dr John Dixon

Putting Divine Principles Before Personal Gain

Many centuries ago the wise man wrote, "Righteousness alone exalts a nation, sin is a disgrace to any people." In 1999 when differing degrees of self-government will come to Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, I hold this precept before us all in this land.

I call upon all our elected representatives in the Northern Ireland Assembly to put Divine principles before party or personal gain and to ensure that all legislation passed and agreed will honour the Sovereign Lord. Issues such as abortion and euthanasia must unite all God-fearing members and ensure that the Creator's rights are respected as paramount in society.

Those who rule in Dublin and Belfast do so under the delegated authority of God. I urge them to use that authority to press within the European Union and United Nations for a just resolution of unpayable Third World Debt. Jubilee 2000 has now become a global movement both within churches and indeed far beyond them. Political leaders on this island have a glorious opportunity to give a lead to our world in breaking these chains that enslave, degrade and starve millions created in the image of God.

I call upon all who claim to be disciples of Jesus Christ to live as He did, to speak as He spoke and to act as He acted. The biggest scandal of recent years has been the disparity between what Christians say with their lips and show in their lives. Let us determine to change all that by God's Grace in 1999.

Dr John Dixon, Presbyterian Moderator.
