Moderator In Ards Visit

Next week Presbyterian Moderator Dr John Dixon will be in the Newtownards/Bangor area when he officially visits the Ards Presbytery.

During the eight days from Sunday, October 4 until Sunday, October 11 the Moderator will conduct special services, meet with ministers, retired minister and elders, bring the greetings of the Presbyterian Church to the mayors of North Down and Ards, be questioned by sixth form pupils and most importantly meet and talk with people in the area.

Dr Dixon is looking forward to this first of his four presbytery visits which later in the year will take him to Donegal, Tyrone and Route Presbyteries . 'One of the great things about being Moderator is that you get to see a whole variety of people that you wouldn't otherwise come in contact with,' said Dr Dixon. 'These presbytery visits give the opportunity to find out what is going on at 'ground level' and hear what is on people's minds. Its always a privilege to share the Christian message and through that bring encouragement, comfort and challenge.'

The Moderator, who will be accompanied during the week by his wife, Claire, will begin his visit on Sunday 4 October conducting morning worship at Scrabo Presbyterian Church and in the evening taking part in the harvest celebrations at First Donaghadee. A visit to the RUC in Newtownards on Tuesday morning will be followed by lunch with ministers and in the afternoon Dr Dixon will meet residents at the Phoenix Nursing Home in Newtownards.

On Wednesday morning the Moderator will be received by the Mayor of North Down Council while on Thursday he will face questions from six formers in the morning at Regent House and, after lunch, at Glastry College. Also on Thursday the Moderator will bring the greetings of the General Assembly to the Mayor of Ards.

The Moderator's visit will finish on Sunday 11 October when he joins the members of Conlig Presbyterian Church to celebrate their 150th anniversary and in the evening takes part in a youth rally at the High Street,Holywood congregation.

A full itinerary follows and details and arrangements for photography can be finalised with Dr John Ross, Tel 01232 423209.
