Presbyterian Moderator Dr John Dixon has issued the following statement in support of Rev William Bingham.
In view of the recent disgraceful attacks on Rev William Bingham, I wish to state publicly that I admire and support the courageous stand he has taken. I know that many members of the Presbyterian Church feel the same way.
I am glad that many of his fellow chaplains in the Orange Order have voiced their support for him. I would hope and pray that others, especially those in influential positions, would reflect on Mr Binghamıs words and act and speak accordingly.
Mr Bingham is a highly respected minister of our Church who has been seeking to preach the Word of God and apply it to the present situation without fear or favour. His statements have been entirely consistent with the teachings of Scripture and the official pronouncements of our Church on the issue of disputed parades.
The violent events now nightly associated with the continuing Orange presence at Drumcree are wholly unsupportable by any Christian standard. Attacks on the security forces cannot be condoned by Christian people.
I equally deplore the continued burning of Orange Halls and welcome Archbishop Bradyıs condemnation of such activity. I appeal for such attacks to cease recognising fully the sense of hurt and fear such acts bring into isolated and rural communities.
