Presbyterian Church Commissions 200 Young People for Summer Programmes

At a special service tonight (16-06-98 at 8.00pm) in Moira Presbyterian Church, over 200 young people will be commissioned for work in summer schemes run by the Presbyterian Church throughout Ireland and overseas.

Teams will be travelling to Nepal, Hungary, Romania, London and 16 venues throughout Ireland. During the summer they will be involved in relief projects, medical care, education programmes, summer children's clubs, door to door evangelism and above all having a good time!

Conducting the commissioning service will be Presbyterian Moderator Dr John Dixon and convener of the Church's Youth Board, Rev Daniel Kane. 'These summer programme are great opportunities to travel and see what is happening elsewhere,' said Dr Dixon, 'but what really impresses me is the desire and commitment that these young people have to share their Christian faith with others both here in Ireland and overseas.'

Furthest travelled will be the team of 12 travelling to Nepal for 4 weeks in mid-August under the leadership of a former Presbyterian missionaries to the country Peter and Asa McDowell. On arrival in Kathmandu they will be 'studying mission' with local Nepali church leaders and missionaries before travelling out and around the country to see at first hand what is happening and help with medical and educational projects.

Two teams are to travel to Central Europe in July and will visit the Presbyterian Church's partner churches in Hungary and Romania. Their main involvement will be helping at children's camps run by the local churches.

However the majority of the young people will be involved in the 16 summer programmes throughout Ireland from Carlow to Kilcooley and Lucan to Lisburn. Mostly based at local churches, they will be helping with summer outreach programmes involving beach missions, children's clubs, street theatre and door to door evangelism.
