Presbyterians Scoop Major Video Award

The Presbyterian Church in Ireland Video Unit has been awarded two prestigious ANDREW CROSS awards, presented for the best local and national religious broadcasting and video production in the UK. The awards, judged by the Churches Advisory Council for Local Broadcasting were given for two films, 'The Score,' and 'Too Soon to Die" and were selected from over 193 entries from broadcasters and film makers throughout the UK.

"The Score" is designed to get 12-15 year olds talking about drugs. It tackles hard hitting questions such as 'Are young people involved in drugs or at risk?','What's the reality of dabbling in potentially deadly substances?', 'What's the attraction of stuff that's dangerous?' and 'Is there an alternative?' The production was funded by the Presbyterian Women's Association and launched in May of last year. It further shows the commitment of the Presbyterian Church to preventive drug education following on from last week's announcement at the General Assembly that the Church is developing a scheme to train volunteers to NVQ level in promoting the anti-drug message.

The second award winning film is "Too Soon To Die," a special report from the Overseas Board of the Presbyterian Church which gives a unique insight into the problem of HIV and AIDS in Malawi. It features a powerful account of the battle facing health and church workers alike, including staff of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, in their struggle to minister to those in need.

Receiving the awards earlier this week were Rev. Brian Boyd, Convener of the Presbyterian Alcohol and Drug Education Committee, and Information Officer, Stephen Lynas.

This award is tremendous recognition for the work done in our video unit and more generally in the whole communications department, said Stephen Lynas. 'It is essential to let our own members know what their church is doing. That is the function of the Communications Department and it is pleasing that the quality of work we produce has been recognised by other fellow professionals.'
