Moderator Comments on Referendum Result

Presbyterian Moderator Dr Sam Hutchinson has made the following comment following the declaration of the Referendum result in Northern Ireland.

I am glad that a huge number of the people of Ireland, both North and South, have taken the opportunity to express their opinion and spoken decisively in the referenda. An inconclusive result would have been most unsatisfactory.

There was a long, keen debate on the issues, as is right and proper in a democracy. I hope that everyone will now accept this result without either triumphalism or recrimination.

Many will wish to celebrate this weekend and that is understandable, but let us not forget the injured and the bereaved.

I hope that the coming election campaign will look to the future and to the building of a new and better society for us all. Since we are made in the image of God, that society should be free of violence and be marked by respect for the rights of everyone.

There are still many challenges and opportunities facing this community. I hope they will be faced in a spirit of on-going goodwill and co-operation. The work of peacemaking to build relationships of trust and understanding must continue undiminished.

As Christians we will continue to pray to God that peace will be firmly established and the long days of strife and division will be at an end.
