A Century of Witness in Ravenhill

This Sunday, 10-05-98, Presbyterian Moderator Dr Sam Hutchinson follows in the footsteps of his predecessor of 100 years ago, Rev Professor Matthew Leitch, when he conveys the greetings of the General Assembly to Ravenhill Presbyterian Church on the celebration of its centenary.

Prof Leitch brought similar greetings to the congregation on its formation in May 1897 when he conducted the opening services in the original church building known as the 'Iron Church' on 29 May 1897.

Three weeks later on June 16, Rev John Ross was ordained and installed as the congregations first minister. Since then there have been three ministers and the present minister Rev William McKeown was installed in 1991.

Ravenhill was the 49th Presbyterian Church established in Belfast and has always occupied the site at the junction of Ravenhill Road and Ravenhill Avenue. The present church building on that site was opened in 1905 and renovated in 1981 after fire damage.

Over the last five months the congregation has held a 'season of commemoration' to celebrate its first 100 years including the writing of a history prepared by Ivan Jess. Those celebrations reach a climax this Sunday with the visit of the Moderator to conduct morning worship.
