Statement by Rev Derek Poots

We were deeply saddened on Friday night when we heard the news of another brutal murder, which, for its callous brutality, stands out in a city which has suffered under so many dastardly deeds.

We could see the simple domestic scene - Friday night, shopping, loading the car, talking to friends - then this, a human life taken, a wife and family plunged into grief. Our hearts went out to you and our eyes were misty with tears. Yet what we felt was a weak reflection of what you felt in your moment of tragic loss. I know you have been strengthened by prayer, by visits, by the arms of friends around you.

Many prayers have been offered today. Some will have prayed that these evil men will be brought to justice and that those who could do so will have the courage to provide the necessary evidence. Some have prayed that, somehow, God will lead us to a just solution to the seemingly insoluble problems of our homeland. We can say 'Amen' to all of that. But we are here primarily to give thanks for the life which has gone from this world and to pray for you. It is my privilege to express the deep sympathy of the wider Presbyterian family to you - if I may call you Joan, and to you Lynn. Our hearts go out to you in love.

Yesterday afternoon I had a call from the Moderator who is in Jerusalem - somehow fitting to be in the birthplace of the Christian faith at a time like this. He asked me to express his personal sympathy and to assure you that you are in his thoughts and prayers.
