Bombing is Cynical Attempt to Raise Community Tension

Presbyterian Moderator Dr Sam Hutchinson has described the bomb attacks in Portadown and Moira as 'cynical attempts to further raise community tension.'

Speaking in Portadown after seeing at first hand the damage caused, the Moderator added, 'It is hardly coincidental that today's attack has taken place in a largely protestant area where community tension is already high. This attack and the one in Moira must be seen as further attempts to plunge all paramilitaries back into the ways of violence which we hoped they had left behind and I'm convinced the vast majority of people do not want.'

The Moderator expressed his sympathy to all those who have had property damaged and was quick to praise 'the magnificent work of the RUC' in clearing the area and ensuring that there was no loss of life despite the limited warning given.

Dr Hutchinson also visited one of the RUC Officers injured in Friday night's bombing in Moira.
