Following tonight's killing in Utility Street, Presbyterian Moderator Dr Sam Hutchinson has issued the following statement.
The Presbyterian Church extends its deepest sympathy to those bereaved by recent sectarian killings. The continuing murder of innocent people is an outrage against God and humanity and is to be utterly condemned and repudiated.
This crisis calls for responsible action. If anyone has influence over these gunmen then they must use it to make them recognise the short sightedness of their actions and stop this killing policy that is only bringing misery and despair. If these murders are designed to wreck the political talks that strategy must not be allowed to succeed.
The talks process must continue as a matter of urgency. An accommodation must be found that will command the support of reasonable people across the community, of which I believe there are many. This would create a stable society allowing people to live the normal lives for which they yearn.
